Do you have any rooting horomone? If not, it can be found at WM and it's somewhere between $5 & $10 a bottle...which will probably last you and your offspring for the rest of any natural lives. I've used this to propogate a beloved rose bush that's past saving and I have a friend that has started a whole hedge of Nanking Cherries using this. Of course, the twigs are staight cut and much shorter. AND the cutting is then placed under a large quart size mason jar until the weather warms. (a southern take on the french cloche (sp?) method). Maybe if you dipped the bare no-root ends and kept them watered they would take off? If you just planted them today, I don't think they would suffer much of a set-back if you did this in a few days.

Sometimes very young trees are sent that way---essentially as little unrooted cuttings that you just stick in the ground and they root. The seller should have told you they would arrive that way though. I'd e-mail them and ask nicely if this is what they normally send out---unrooted twigs---and see what they say. If they say yes, then I hope the cost per plant was really, really low.

When I start trees or shrubs in this fashion, I use a rooting hormone and plant them in a raised bed in the veggie garden for a year to let them form a good root system, then I move them to their permanent place in the yard the following year. When I don't have any rooting hormone sitting around on the shelf, I just soak the cuttings in willow water before sticking them into the ground.

Thanks Paula and Dawn. I only paid 2.50 each for 4 of them and they sent 7. My first thought was somebody felt guilty when they were packing them and threw in afew xtra lol.I will try the rooting hormone on 3 or 4 tomorrow and see what happens then to all seven.
