Your orchid is a Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchid). It's not in great shape. The split in the leaf tells me that has been grown in too dry conditions. Phalaenopsis orchids are natives of the Phillipines and other SE Asian countries. Weather conditions there are warm and humid all the year round. In New York this will be a challenge. The good news is for 6 months of the year - the next - you have the same conditions as the Phillipines. Keep this plant outdoors and water it plenty until the fall*. Your primary concern then is to keep the temperature warm. Don't let it get colder than 60F. Don't worry about air humidity like many books say. Keep watering it. In the winter months make sure it has as much light as possible. It will tolerate full sun in winter. Good luck. - Ian.

Thank you! A followup question: this orchid, unlike my 4 or 5 others (I think all Phalaenopsis except one) is potted in a mossy mix. The rest are in bark and dirt and are much happier. Should I repot and use the bark mix that the rest of the orchids are in? It hasn't been repotted in at least 2 years, so it seems time anyway.

Moss is fine for Phallies as they do not like to be dry for too long. The great majority of orchids sold in stores are epiphytic (grow on trees) and should not be grown in garden dirt, though bark is OK. If you have a photo of your other (non-Phally) orchid I may be able to be more specific. - Ian.
