You can always try contacting an arborist company. They typically chip up trees that they take out.

I second LikesFerns. The free mulch thing is over-rated, I believe, after so many mentions on gardening forums. I cannot throw much money at gardening, either. I contacted a local tree trimmer in Stillwater where they give away mulch for free, but only if we come over and pitch it into our own truck by ourselves. They load for a small fee on any size load. Not too bad. I've never been able to get any because I don't have the disposable money for gas. And when I'm over that way I'm spending my money on something more important, like seed. *shrugs Maybe one of these days....

I live in the country and get free mulch and love it, and I take about anything I can get. When you figure the gas and labor in, its not really "free", but if they were giving it away at town it still would not be free by the time you got it home..

If you are not too picky about your mulch, the city dumps their wood chips off of SE 15th between Douglas and Midwest Blvd. on the south side of the road near the train tracks. Some are small, some are thick and it will have large twigs, sometimes I find trash in it (plastic and metals) but not very much. I'm using it for the pathways in my garden.
