When to 'fertilze'

An article in yesterdays newspaper from one of the largish "fertilizer" companies said not to put "fertilizer" down until after you have mowed your grass at least twice. After the soil is warm enough for good growth. Since grass grows in the spring that could really wait until about mid June.

That is the rule of thumb down here FOR SYNTHETIC FERTILIZER. For organic fertilizer, since it takes several weeks to get going, I apply about 3 weeks prior to the last frost date. For us that date is mid March, so I apply on Washington's Birthday.

Mid June is too late for synthetics. I would not go past Memorial Day for most of the country and even sooner in the desert south west.
