I am so upset I missed a shot of all 9! What a time for a camera break.

I am getting to love deciduos Lycaste's almost as much as Mr Breeze love Angs! You stick them in good light for 1/2 the year and literally forget them :-). They give a lot back for giving them almost complete privacy.

The flowers are a butter squash orange and fragrance is also buttery. Soft smell. Looking forward to the Locusta next

You've got a looooooong way to go before you'll love those Lycastes as much as I love Angs! Cuz i love Angs a LOT! But i agree, Lycastes are cool and easy orchids with great fragrance. If only they came in a wider variety of colors... I would love a pure white one, it would mesh well with my white-flowered Angraecoids. :)

You make me giggle Mr B! I am in Lycaste Lovvvve! The Locusta is green ... I'll have to look around, isn't there a white one? Could swear I saw one.

I am wondering if my other big Lycaste PB is hollow/dead? Its doing nada but shriveling. Its got a hole in it. I bought it that way but didn't see it until it started shriveling back.

While we are on the subject of Angs, can you recommend me an Ang(el) that is as fragrant or more fragrant than a Falcata please? I want to give Angs a whirl. Have 1. Love the Falcata's fragrance. Falcata should be an ice cream flavour!

Oh and In 24 hours that little spike/ leaf made itself known, Carolyn was right! spikkkke!!!!! Woo Hoo! Wow, they grow really fast!

I caught the tail end of the blooms photgraphically, but a 10th bud is coming! Had 9 flowers. Quite a show for a leafless plant. Its a natural for z-5. Loves the temps. If you can bloom it in a window in winter, loves it. .... and the best part, it gets ignored for months at a time! This went dormant in Dec/Jan. Just starting to water it more regularly now. If you can handle 3'-4' scarf-like leaves for about 6 months, then the rest of the time it occupies little space & time :-).

They make nice cut flowers too. The flowers are between 2 1/2 -3", nice size. I really pushed this one with light. Cultural notes say lower light, I don't think that low light does it justice. Catt light produces better results. Its a "big show, little work" orchid. I want another!

Yea, I've seen photos of albas or maybe hybrids that are white. I've just never tried to get one. I don't really have the space. :(

Regarding the hole...I'm pretty sure I've read that Lycastes often live in/on Anthills or at least have an association with ants. So maybe that hole was their front door! :) There definitely is a type of orchid that grows hollow bulbs just for that purpose. I can't recall the name.

Ummm, Angs? Well, I'm not sure any have as powerful a fragrance as Neof. But some Angraecums are better and nearly as powerful. Florulentum is one of the best fragrances ever. Scottianum is nice and an easy to grow plant. Elephantinum smells good. Magdalenae smells amazing! You should get one for sure, it would like your zone 5 temps. Aerangis fastuosa smells fantastic. Every Jumellea I've smelt has been a pleasure. Aeranthes grandiflora smells like butter and is easy to grow. People talk about how great didieri smells but mine hasn't bloomed yet. :( Those would be good to start with. After you get all those, let me know and i'll give you more fragrant Ang suggestions! :) (((((Angs)))))

Mr B. thanks for the recommendations and the tip on the ants! I have not read that but it makes sense. So maybe there is hope for the other big bulb yet. I am anxious to try more angs. I am having such a good time with the Neo and the Elisii. The Neo has 1 growth in bloom another mature one that should bloom any time and it put out another entire growth this month. I have not repotted yet. (Thanks for the potting link). In plain bark and growing fast! New roots, just fantastic! I can only imagine when it gets repotted Asian style. Great observation about watching the roots. That works!

The Elissi decided to sleep. What a strange little creature isn't it? No new roots but I can see he is thinking about it. In really beautiful light but you are right, they get confused as to their location. Let him have his beauty sleep now. He will be very busy shortly! Is yours sleeping too?

Between Angs and Lycastes, I feel a spree coming on!

Love your pretty bloom! Good growing. I'll have to check and see if my aromatica is possibly setting more buds. It had two a couple weeks ago. After a a weeks absence from my GH, I found that bugs had feasted on the buds :(((. My plant is very young, so I may have to wait for next year.

I hoped for flowers on New Years Day. They were late. No problem. There were originally 8 buds. Two died before opening. Several weeks after the original flush of 8, 3 more appeared! I won't mind the "extension" of the blooming season. Some of these have already been open about two weeks.
