The best source of information about controlling Fire Ants is Texas A & M. Not all of the information is organic and I am not all that sure that organic solutions work well. There is a lot of myth and misinformation out there about these buggers so a good source of informaiton is necessary.

I've used dried molasses very successfully as a fire ant repellent. Fire ants seem to hate the stuff. I believe the sugar in the molasses excites microbial life in the soil that causes the fire ants to leave the area. Fire ants prefer areas with poor soil. Improve your soil organically, and your fire ants should go elsewhere. Many years ago I tried various chemical solutions to fire ants, and the chemicals would kill the mound, but a new mound would form elsewhere in the yard. Today I've noticed the chemical manufacturers are now saying to broadcast the fire ant killer all over the yard. I say no thank you. I'll stick to molasses and compost. Not only is it cheaper, but it is also safer, more effective, and good for the soil. It's one of those areas where I feel the organic solution is without equal.

I've always had good luck with molasses. I mix about 3 ounces in a gallon of water and drench the mount.

Fire ants we have are protein collectors. They stay away from anything sweet. My theory as to why molasses would work is that sugar in the mound will contaminate their food supply.
