Something else. Corn gluten meal is a bright yellow dust. But my dog certainly thinks it smells like dog food.

haha, sorry, i shoulda mentioned that it was pellets, not meal. i googled 'corn gluten pellets pics' and the results i found look close to what i have out in the yard.
the place i got it from is a feed supply store...it was 13 bucks for 100 lbs.

The only place I've ever seen corn gluten meal or pellets for that prices is in western Ohio or eastern Indiana. If you don't live in either of those places, I'm still suspicious of what you had. Elsewhere corn gluten meal costs from $30-$60 for 50 pounds.

Supposedly we get corn gluten (from gardens alive) with some added organic matter and it looks very similar to rabbit food. You can see the yellow in it though. I really envy some of you country folk....We paid around 60 bucks a bag for 40#

could gluten be a 'gluten' from another kind of material besides corn?

Whatever it is it's probably great stuff. I would not worry about that. The only concern might be if you thought it was CGM for the preemergent weed control qualities.
