Judy, I know exactly how you feel. I keep looking around my garden looking for green things. My garlic is doing fine,everything else looks yuck. Well my spearmint looks ok.
Ive got some of my seed catologs too and i look and look and look and everyday go look for a new one to come in.

I actually went in to town and bought a 50-lb. bag of seed-starting mix and several packets of lettuce seed. I am going to plant some under lights and see how that goes, never done it before. I have a room in the milk parlor now that is really cool that I put the lights in. Hope it works, I get so tired of the green leather they are calling lettuce in the store. Let you know how it turns out.

We have been having rain daily now for a few days and you can really get crazy shut in. We have had 7 inches over the last two days.

I pulled away the leaves and saw sedum (autumn joy, i think) poking their little heads out.

The recent warm weather has brought some of my daffodils up 4 inches but they are smart enough not to bloom yet!At least everything is well watered now.I will not complain!!!I too have had lots of seed catalogs-everything is wonderful in them.Last year,I got real antsy about planting and growing and bought a 25 cent pack of coleus seed and planted them.They take forever but are fun to watch grow.Had a nice crop but they aren't near as pretty as the hybrids that the greenhouses sell.I actually got out in the garden and worked a few days last week after neglecting everything for months.It was so nice-70' and now back down to 18' in the next few days!The light lettuce sounds good.Be sure to leave the lights on long enough.Posy Pet

Well guess the warm went away. But am still aching to get outside and busy. Have so many plans in my head . Have also been thinking about a plant swap this spring. So will have to see how things go. Judy

I have spring fever too. I blame the plant and seed catalogs that keep showing up in my mailbox. Those pictures are always soooo tempting.
Did you find a good deal on seed starting mix somewhere GD? I have potting soil that I'm planning to use for winter sowing but not very much and it's a little harder to find cheap stuff in January. Where'd you get it?

That rain stopped just in time. I was getting pretty worried about the new carpet in my basement. Glad it didn't get wet. Whew!

Got 2 more catalogs yesterday and had to look them over. Wish there was a sweepstakes to win all of it. But it does keep you busy looking for the perfect plants for your garden. Judy

Anybody else get Plant Delights catalog?? I could go bankrupt ordering and laugh my head off just reading the catalog! What a pure delight! Many hard to find and new varieties.

Been working outside pruning everything that can be pruned. (Not roses yet) but trying to get a head start on spring. Beautiful today here and perfect for limbing up and hauling off. So neat to get out in the garden and actually "do something".

My DW and I just moved into our first new (78 year old) home last month.
We have no idea what's growing in the beds yet, and can't wait for spring to come.

i, too, am rushing spring. i've built a light cart--(have a $800. light cart for little over $ 100.) and i've been busy ordering seeds and few plants. my weakness is tomatoes. i JUST HAVE to have a seed or 2 of each one that sounds good--and now, theres only the 2 of us, and getting up in years.oh, well, the kids will take some-after i raise them.but, really, i think we have winters to rejuvinate us older gardeners for spring planting !!

Gladno, I think it will work for you. I use an unheated greenhouse, but the light is probably lower than most because it has 2 layers of the fabric that is used to cover the side windows on chicken houses. No supplemental light. We usually start it in September so that it is faily well grown before the days get too short. With light, yours should do well. It does need to stay above 28/29 degrees, though. We have hot water lines under the beds that we can use when the temps go really cold. Try to hold the soil temp at 55-60, then we can toss a floating row cover over the top at night and the heat from the soil is trapped underneath. We can have lettuce, onions and spinach (and many others) for salads all winter this way.

I got a real surprise, when I walked up the hill to the mailbox, this past week and the whole hillside, facing south, was abloom with purple and yellow Crocus, the coldsnap in Dec. must have triggered them to start blooming. I don't know how they'll like tonights 8 degs, but they have been there for over 8 yrs so they'll survive. My Daylillies are also coming up,, so I put some sawdust over them to help protect them.
