I have never heard about or used Texas Tee, but you are correct about mixing up the grains. The more diverse your grains the more diverse the biology.

You could get Used Coffee Grounds from Starbucks for free.
Also, the Scott's Co. is making an organic fert. It covers 4000sqft and cost around $14.00.

One more thing. I know most people say mow high, and this is true for most grass varieties. But, Bermuda does not fall into this category. It should be mowed low @ 1" or less. Gradually lower the height of your mower over the next few mowing's.

And about the mowing height, thats what iam doing. mowing @ 1" or as high bermuda can be.

I've used it. The ingredients listed in order on the bag that I remember using were as follows

Ground grains
Feather Meal
Blood Meal

The main single ingredient was feather meal but the way they combined the grains into one lot, it made it look like it was more grains. Well, it is, sort of. But note that the formula has changed. Lou has a newer bag and it doesn't have blood meal anymore. Not sure why, but the kelp seems to have replaced it.

The reason I used it was because my neighbor's lawn was so green all winter long. I asked her what she used and it was Texas Tee. So I tried it and my lawn went dormant as usual that year. So I watched carefully. She had a gardener who came twice a week. He watered every Tuesday of the year. So the next winter I tried watering once a week and my lawn never went dormant. So it was not the fertilizer but the irrigation. I have not bought any Texas Tee since, but I would not discourage anyone from using it. It has good stuff in it. I know a woman who lives in West Covina, CA (eastern LA county) who had Texas Tee shipped from San Antonio because organic fertilizer is so hard to find out there.

Here are the ingredients found in Texas Tee-

Primary Nutrients:
Feather meal, alfalfa meal, soybean meal, compost, corn meal, ferrous sulphate, calcium phosphate, humates, kelp meal, molasses, sulphate of potash, magnesia, wheat mids, and yeast.

David, What was the coldest temperature you've experienced this past winter? I don't know if watering in the middle of the winter would have helped in my case with multiple hard freezes in the low 20s.

In San Antonio, where my lawn is, they had temps in the high 20s.

In Pampa, where I work, they had temps in the low teens...but I know what you mean. The watering will work where the soil temp stays above 50 degrees F. Do we know where the OP lives?

He lives in Irving which should have been classified as zone 8, not 7. It's about 15,20 miles north of me.

My lawn was as brown as it can be over the winter then it started to green up in late February. Still hasn't completely filled in. May is usually when it's warm enough for warm grass to REALLY start growing unless we hit hot spell early. Anyway, I ended up with too much dead grass (probably around 5 inches when it went brown) and I think it slowed down green up because dead grass was blocking sunlight to the ground where the new grass isn't getting anything. I may have to rethink about it. Maybe mow around 2 inches on March 1st to get rid of excessive dead grass. Also, I probably won't allow them to grow tall for the winter and keep them around 3 inches so I wouldn't have to deal with excessive dead grass. I've had to mow a several times to get to 3 inches height. Live and learn, I guess.

lou, I always wondered why your zone is 8 and mine is 7 i got my zone from gardenweb zone finder. I dont know if 8 or 7 makes that much difference. I am confused.
Anyways, i agree my lawn started going brown mid nov and started greening up end of Feb and still has some brown grass. I tried watering it in winter to see if it might stay green but no success.
All i need is a healthy green lawn from march to nov and less or no weeds and i think i have it. my goal is to have a chemical free lawn like green carpet and one day i hope i will get it.

When is the last time it went below 10 degree because zone 7 is for 0-10*F while zone 8 is for 10-20*F. I don't think I've never seen below 10*F since I moved here in 2002. I think your zone 7 is based on old data from the 1980s which set records for low temperature. Actually, I think we are back to where we were before that happened and there's new zone out where zone 8 is pushed back all the way to Red River but apparently, it's not readily accepted.
