It is a Stanhopea. Not sure if it is a species or a hybrid. Just try and copy the situation and method that your friend used. Must be grown in a hanging basket because of the flowering habit. Maybe it will need a "repot" and division at some time in the future but read up and take your time about such a drastic step. Perhaps seek help from any nearby orchid society.

What an incredible sight! It looks a bit like Stanopea tigrina. Despite their very unusual and exotic appearance, Stanhopeas, which are native to this part of Brazil, are not all that difficult to grow. They like plenty of shade and fairly even temperatures all year round. Water plenty in summer and very little in winter and you should get another fantastic display like this...
