You will get more response over on discussions, but it should be possible with a bit of training, The natural way of growing is up to the light so a Cattleya may not be the best candidate for this exercise.

I agree with Arthur, but if you can take a photo of the plant and post it, either here and/or the discussions side, it would help.
I would think with some of the larger orchids it would be a bit difficult to train into a ball. I have a Brassavola nodosa ( a smaller orchid) that is wanting to grow on all sides, and it's in a wooden basket. It would need light from all sides to encourage this formation.
