I have columbine coming up but, alas, no Va. bluebells. They look like purple cabbages.

Sounds like everything may get a blanket of snow shortly.

Helen do you know the scientific name of the Virgina bluebells? I'd like to look it up in the flower book to see the blossom. Dorothy

They are ephemerials and disappear and blooming.

Are your bluebells in sun or shade Helen? I planted one on the east side of my house one year and it croaked.

Christie, my elderly neighbor had a whole bed of these next to her foundation on the north side of her house and they did fantastically well.

I tried to write - disappear after blooming. They are adapted to forest shade. They do their thing before the trees get leaves and then die back until next year. I buy them at the garden center. Mine have not multiplied except the clump is bigger but they haven't spread. I have thought of clearing all around them and improving the soil so they have a better chance of spreading. The hostas take up their spot after they bloom so I really haven't provided a good way for them to spread. I like their blue color even though it is brief and I don't have to water them in summer.
