My Japanese Painted ferns were near death by the end of the summer last year. I hope they made it. I'm always glad to see them in the spring.
I have some new seedlings up - Delosperma 'Stardust' that I winter sowed and some California poppies that I direct sowed.

I have lots of Variegated Solomon's Seal starting to poke up out of the ground and a few hosta eyes.

Love this warm weather but I'm starting to learn that late frosts are almost guaranteed so I kind of wish some things would stay in the ground for awhile.

The coleus are from cuttings from last year's plants and they don't look nearly as good as last year's cuttings. I am hoping they improve outside now.

William these were originally from seed. I did the Wizard series I think from Pinetree and they did fantastic. This was a couple of years ago.

Vickie - I found my Japanese Painted Ferns. : ) I also found blood root and Dutchman's breeches blooming, twin flower, trillium, and golden seal coming up, bleeding heart is almost ready to bloom, and I saw a snake - just a garter snake but it still startled me. I had to step sideways to miss it.

Christie, so glad you found your painted fern. I'm beginning to think they're tougher than they look.

It rained and the dogwoods have suddenly turned white.Some hostas are up and i've a few iris buds. I'm still slowly raking leaves away from steps and snaky places. Have'nt seen any snakes yet but did see a lizard.

Our dogwoods have been white for a few days too. Sounds like we're keeping up with you this year. It's been warmer than normal. The flowering trees have been beautiful this year. Seems like everything was flowering at the same time.

My salvia greggi and darcyi both are starting to come out. I was pretty concerned that they might not have made it though our soggy, icy winter.

I picked a couple spears of asparagus this week and I think it might be time to look for morels. yum

My heucherella 'Stoplight' died so I planted something else in its place and then wadayaknow, yesterday I found my Stoplight coming up a few inches over from where I thought it was. I don't know how I kept from digging it up. I moved it to a shadier spot so maybe it will do better now. It struggles in our heat. That's why it's so small I couldn't find it. lol

My varigated Solomon's Seal is Blooming! What is this coming freeze--forcast mid20's--going to do to it? It's the first year for it so I don't know what to expect. Should I cover it?

I have variegated Solomon's seal (one of my very favorite plants) and don't usually cover it when we have a late frost. I don't think I've ever had it so far along with a freeze though so I can't say for sure. It doesn't get berries on it like other Solomon's seal so that won't matter anyway. I do know that it will return even if it gets broken off or eaten off at the base but you won't see it until NEXT spring if that happens. It sends up pointy sprouts like a hosta only they are pink at first.
