My passion vines just began emerging last week and I live in S.E.Mo. Cannas may begin peeking out but its still a bit early for them unless they are on southside of home and protected. I wouldnt write anything off as goners just yet.

I just went out and checked where my passion vine is (was?). It's not up yet, and it's on the south side of the "barn" (really just a big shed)...

My south-facing cannas are up, but none of the others. However, after the Tropicanna discussion I went out and checked on mine. The top part of the root is all dead, but there's a white shoot coming up out of the bottom. YAY!!

All of my hostas are up except for Big Daddy (which is coming), including one I don't remember the name of that I bought at Garden of Dreams that I paid "good" money for. :( I'm sure it's not *that* special, but it was one I liked... (Maybe I'll post a pic when it gets a little bigger.)

I am waiting to see shoots on crepe myrtle. Some of mine have sprouts; others have nothing. Also I planted a lot of lilies; some are up. I am afraid the voles may like them as much as they like tulips. If so, I'll put them in pots next time. I have many in pots already which I considered a temporary solution to the problem I have of buying with no room to plant. The lilies do seem to survive the winter OK in pots. Hosta do great in pots, so I can buy as many as I want with no thought to space available.

My passion vine isn't up as are some other things that are likely DEAD.A nice lady from a greenhouse told me that some of the gauras are not hardy-I thought they all were!I had a pleasant surprise with all the dead things-baby hellebores under the first plant that I got at the Springfield master gardeners sale.Most of the plants that I have bought there have lived.I envy your cannas outside.Mine are still in their foam storage boxes and the dahlias are coming out of theirs so I have got to get them planted!!Posy Pet

Waiting to see butterfly weed, but I think it naps until later. Don't have a passion vine to look for, wish I did.
Saw this one sprout coming up from some woody looking root material...watched it and watched it...wondered what I had put there........finalllllllly recognized it....it was pokeweed! hahahaha at myself

Butterfly weed is barely emerging here.I had planted something in a pot that died and there was a poke growing in the pot with a perfectly shaped oval root.It looked like a sweet potato!A friend had thrips on her daylilies-I didn't know what they looked like-she said like cornmeal down in the leaves-sure enough,I do have them too.She said they are really bad this year.I'll probably try some insecticidal soap...???Posy Pet

I will have to look closer at my daylilies. They have something and I thought it was aphids. I didn't look close at the bug. I thought thrips were teeny and hard to see. I sprayed them with a strong stream of water from the hose. This bug seems to leave a sticky dark residue that won't spray off. I hate thrips, but I thought they only attack the flower buds. They make the buds fall off and flowers twisted and mottled.

My agastache cana is out now (that's the one I said I wouldn't miss). One of my missing hostas is up but still waiting for the other one. It's usually late though so I'm still watching for it.
Still missing my passion flower and purple knockout salvia. I haven't given up on the passion flower yet but I think the salvia must've rotted over the winter or something.
I don't know whether I've ever seen thrips. Maybe I have and just didn't know it.

saw some kinda tiny bugs on iris, but didn't bother about them...too busy carrying in plants, covering plants. Maybe the cold will zap the bugs.

My daylilies have lots of bugs on them too. I thought they were aphids too but the color was beige so wasn't sure. I had aphids for sure on my sedums a couple of weeks ago stunting the growth so I put seven dust on them, so far so good.

Today I was looking around at my irises and had several about to bloom for the first time by a culvert. Some kind of animal had been digging in the culvert and broke off two of the irises. I'm still crying! I got a lot of new ones last year and didn't expect them to bloom but several of them are and are really pretty.

My cannas have been coming up for 2 or 3 weeks now and are growing good. I have some dahlias to plant and have planted a couple already. One of them is up already.

I think I lost a few hostas over the winter. Last year I lost a couple too. I have plenty of voles or moles or something and an armadillo. I have some new ones that didn't have time to get very big last year that are going crazy now. I can't believe how quick they're growing!

I think I lost my specialty Elephant Ears too except for the dark stemmed one. I really loved the illustris and black magic. I dug them and put them under the house in peat but they were pretty much dried up when I got them out.

I had given up on my passion vine but something is coming up now that just emerged a few days ago. Maybe it lived after all. I noticed the first one coming up in the yard a couple feet from the original plant. Do they do that?
