We used to see one in the yard now and then but haven't lately; I love to hear them call from the woods across the road.

How lucky you got to see one; they are really impressive.

There are a few smallish wooded lots around my area but mostly hayfields. I bet they're more common farther out in the county like you are Glenda. Do you have wooded areas on your farm?

We've also had more Goldfinches than normal this spring. They may be going after the dandelion seeds in our yard. We've been seeing groups (flocks?) of a couple dozen or more at a time. They're so pretty. If it quits raining long enough I need to plant some sunflower seeds. I have three or four kinds to plant. I know they'll come to those.

Yes, we have woods, but they are way at the back and sides, quite far from the house. Across the road there is a narrow field and then a strip of woods. That sounds like where the sound comes from. I never knew what it was until I found it on Cornell's website and, bingo! that was the sound we were hearing.

I never get a good look at them but that call is distinctive.
