Grass, legumes and flowers

I am a teacher at an elementary school with poor soil and no irrigation system. We have an area of land that we call "the dust bowl" because it is sandy and has limited vegetation. Today, I brought in an expert from the state, and he suggested that we plant a combination of grasses, legumes and flowers. I have read here a bit about people purposely planting legumes (clover) in their lawns, but haven't heard much about planting low growing flowers.

Does anyone have experience with this? Any photos of what it would look like? I am picturing an even more beautiful (yes, I think it is somewhat pretty) version of when clover blooms around the neighborhood.

Before YOU plant anything in your school yard...

Find out how many kids have bee sting allergies that could happen if clover and or flowers are in bloom. (hint) It's always the lawyer's kids who are allergic.

rutgers1, I would identify the plants that are growing there now and plant those or similar. The Hort. Agent should be able to give some helpful information here.
I do not know what is the objective of the exercise but the concept of "Right plant in the right place" is relevant in almost every agricultural context.

The guy actually hooked me up with more information than I could have ever asked for:
- a satellite photo of our school with different areas marked off (low areas, high areas, water)
- a breakdown of the soil
- lists of things that will grow there
- and more

For those who live or work in an area where things don't grow or where erosion is an issue, there are soil conservation departments in your state that might be able to help. I have been overwhelmed with all of the stuff that this office has done for us thus far.
