Lovely. I am jealous. I really like Brassavola species and hybrids. They grow well enough for me but it is not the same as what you Floridians are able to grow.

My tendency is to grow what is easy. They mix well with catts. too. Does any species of orchids live near you?

There are native slipper orchids and a couple of other genus. The slippers are the only native orchids commonly cultivated. I have not tried them yet.

I think if I lived there I would try to work with the local species. My guess is they are terrestrial. If so I would try to create a bed of them. Also there must be other orchids on the planet of equal climates with different natural species. If I lived in a cold climate I would try to make cold loving orchids my brassavolas of the north. This is all speculation on my part. I imagine there are some hurdles to jump and I have no clue what those hurdles would be. Could it work?

I understand your point but most of the local terrestrial species are not that attractive to me. They look like something that belongs in a shade loving flower bed. There is nothing wrong with this but I rather visit most of them in the native habitat and get in a nice nature walk in the process. You just don't get a wide range of colors with the local species. Even the slippers tend to have muted colors. additionally, if all you grow are natives your have nothing blooming in the winter, which is pretty long around these parts. I started growing orchids for the bright colors to brighten up the the terrible grey winters in ohio. So growing native orchids alone won't meet that need.

Plus, I like having them inside my house to visit all year round. It is more effort but it is well worth it.

I was thinking they would be more interesting. Is there species from around the world that live in a similar climate that would have more color and interest?
