Lettuce & Broccoli -- start inside or sow directly?

Hi,

I'm starting my indoor seedlings, but I've never grown broccoli. (I'm expanding the garden this year) Should I start it inside or sow directly into the garden in March. If started inside, when does it get transplanted? Last year I bought some plants at a garden place, but that was in late May and they never grew. I was told they need colder weather to start.

About the lettuce, I always thought it did fine by sowing it directly, but just read on one of the forums that it does better as a transplant. Any opinions on this?
