The "recommended" fertilizer would depend on what your soil needs, although applying around 1 pound of Nitrogen per 1,000 square foot probably is a good idea. Since the soil temperatures around me stay quite warm for a good long time after Thanksgiving you are still okay to apply an organic plant food up to then, because your soil temperatures probably stay warm enough to melt snow (light) until almost Christmas.
I have had snow accumulate here in early October, but always have found that the snow in contact with the soil melts, indicating the soil is still quite warm.
