Helen, you have some very good plants. They are looking beautiful. I have never seen calycanthus or known anyone who grew it. The chinese dogwood is pretty too. Do you know the variety of clematis? It sure is a pretty thing.

I have had 2 Calycanthus,(sweetshrub, spicebush), for several years, but seldom get any blooms becuse of the deer. :-(
I have reinforced my fencing this year, and they look much better. I haven't seen any blooms yet...
You have a nice bunch of flowers, Very similar to mine.
Do you have Mockorange in bloom yet? Mine started a few days ago.

Marian, my single blooming mock orange has been in bloom for a few days, but it has no fragrance. I had one I bought and it didn't bloom for 10 years, so cut it down. I do so want the old-fashioned one with that great fragrance.

My calycanthus doesn't smell good. : ( It has a fragrance but sort of smells like rotten fruit or something. I do like its shiny leaves though. I've read you should buy it in bloom to get one that smells good but I don't think I've ever seen it for sale locally around here. I got mine in a trade a few years ago.

My neighbor was here yesterday and I tried to get her to smell the calycanthus. We could not smell much unless you put some flowers in your hand cupped it around your nose. Some days I have smelled its pleasant ripe fruit smell twenty feet away. It's a mystery to me. I want to walk by an area and smell a plant from a distant of several feet. I have learned you have to smell them yourself in the nursery, but I had to order this as it wasn't available locally. I have mock orange that is mildly fragrant; it takes a whole shrub to make the area fragrant. I used to have one like what you described Glenda and have been looking for another for years. It may be my nose. I sure can smell the honeysuckle that is everywhere here.
