That's a treasure Jodonne! You're so lucky to find it. Did they recommend sun or shade? I read something about the amount of sun affecting the color of the leaves.

It's beautiful. I remember you telling us about it. Love the colored edge of the leaf. If you run across one called "Butterfly", let me know. I saw one at the Tyler Rose Garden and in the shade, the leaves were almost pure white! Christie said what I was thinking about the coloring being affected by sun or shade.

You just don't know how excited I was to find this. They had 2 others that were a little more than twice the size of this one but were $125 ea. Way outta my range. Actually I would have bought them had I thought my wife would'nt have skinned me alive. Anyway, your both right. The more sun this thing gets the more orange and red it will have in it. You can give it too much sun though and I hope the spot I have picked out will be O.K. I'm sure you've seen the photos of my front flowerbed with the rock in it!?!?!? Well, I was planning on putting it right behind that rock to fill that space. The house faces ENE so hopefully it won't be too much.

And by the way, Kaye, my father-in-law has 2 of those Butterfly maples you were asking about in his front yard. He gets so many comments on those from everybody that sees them. If I'm not mistaken they had some of those at the nursery in Fayetteville. The nursery was called Westwood Gardens and the phone# is 479-571-1500. You might give them a call. Let me know what you find out.

Sadly, they don't have "Butterfly" but I did find one at Carden-Harris in Branch (they have a great selection of Japanese maples). The bad news is they only have one and it's in a 25 gallon container. My fingers won't type the price! Now, where did you say your in-laws live?? Just kidding!

I made them pull out the book and give me all the info. they had on that little puppy. I don't think they really knew what they had there. There were only 3 of them and nobody knew anything about them. I guess I made a pretty good fuss about it. I was excited, what can I say!!!

Try this out. I have only heard good things about these people. I have never ordered myself but they have good press in the maple forum.

Sorry... yes, Jodonne. I ordered some plants from that vendor this spring. Hilda and I were both looking at the Japanese maples there at the time. They will be really small plants, I think and the "possibly identical to" phrase threw me. I'm going to be patient and wait 'til fall when Carden-Harris gets some in..Ron already told me NO on the 25 gallon size! Thanks for the research...enjoy yours. Oh, by the way, if you are planting in a lot of sun, you might think of spraying with Wilt-Pruf..it stopped any leaf scorch we had on ours.

So where do you get this Wilt-Pruf?

Kaye, when you say "Branch"....are you talking about that small town between Ft. Smith & Paris? (or was it between Charleston & ??). Years ago, I used to go to Paris courthouse to research records and seems that there wasn't much more than a wide spot in the road at Branch.

Chance, it's still a wide spot in the road and yes, it's on Hwy. 22 between Ft. Smith and Paris (may be nearer Charleston). They are only open by phone appointment this time of year. Azaleas and Japanese maples are their specialty..beautiful plants. They are listed in the local phone book.

Jodonne, the Co-op often carries the Wilt-Pruf. We order in online in large quantities since we spray the roses, too. It does a great job in the summer from keeping the plants becoming dessicated by the heat and protects the Japanese Maples from the leaf burn.

Like you, I picked out an 'Autumn Moon' from the Wayside Gardens catalog, but never considered ordering from them because of the price and because of a low rating on the Garden Watchdog. I was planning on ordering one from worldplants.com in the spring when they get some more. I know it will be small, but I can't afford $70 or more for a tree, and it is supposed to be a fairly fast grower. (?)

I live in LA but am in AR a lot because my mom has a cabin in the Mulberry River area. So I would like to know if the price you paid for this is in my league or not (if you don't mind saying)...if so, I would make the trip to Fayetteville sometime when I'm up there to check on this! I looked, but never did see anywhere you said how much you paid for this one. And is that a one-gallon pot?

I realize the last posting on this was in June...I would also be curious to know how the tree is doing in the site you picked for it. (If found this thread through a search.)

And the person who said they ordered this spring from worldplants.com (Kaye?)...how did that go? I've heard nothing but good about them. I know the plants are small, but they have end-of-season specials...two-year plants for the price of one-year plants. Have you ever ordered one of those? They have three on special right now that I've been seriously considering ordering before they stop shipping for the winter!
