I am in zone 5/6 and if we are talking about the same thing--I have some blooming now as well. They are Lycoris squamigera--also know as Naked Ladies because they have foliage in the spring which disappears and then the flowers pop up on a lone stalk without leaves later.

I have learned while gardening that you don't set your calendar according to bloom time---plants bloom earlier, later some years--I think some of it has to do with weather conditions.

Ours are not blooming yet but I have noticed that the ones in the woods in dense shade come up and bloom earlier than the ones in the garden. Ours usually emerge following late summer rain. It is extremely dry and hot now. Have also noticed they come up and bloom at various times in late summer around our community. EP

Susy, I've heard these called naked ladies, surprise lily, resurrection lily ... yes foilage in spring that disappears and then the one stalk with the pretty pink flowers on top.

EP, I have these planted in a spot that gets approx. 4 hours of full morning sun and shade rest of day. The ones I have in full sun haven't done anything yet.

i thought mine weren't blooming, till i looked a a few distant beds. usually they bloom after a rain--following a dry spell, make sense? lol--but, perhaps thats why mine are early. no rain for long time, then a inch of rain.

Mine started blooming this week. It was dry here too for several weeks and then we got a rain. I've never noticed that they bloom after a rain. That's good to know. In fact, I didn't think it was time for them either so was truly "surprised" when I saw the first one on Tuesday!

Mine are in poor soil and almost full sun and bloom about this time after a good rain-I don't water them.And what do you think of their smell?I think they STINK!Like something dead.Posy Pet

Yes, I noted that they will bloom following a summer rain...especially if it has been dry up to that time. It's almost as if they think it may be their only chance that summer. Always meant to water some real well and not others to test that idea, but never remembered to do it.

We had a refreshing rain from late afternoon yesterday and during the night. I had not been into the woods for a few days so decided to check for the surprise lilies (Lycoris squamingera) . The ones along the woods path are up, almost 3 feet tall and in full bloom. Haven't seen signs of any in the garden yet, so maybe they will be popping up any day. EP

Ours are up here for about a week..no rain in two months..but they are planted in the beds that are irrigated. It may be a little early for them..I don't really remember.

One patch of my surprise lilies have been in bloom for several days . I have at least 6 other patches . The ones in bloom have no more sun or watering than others that aren't up . I have no idea what the differance is .

The surprise lilies in the garden are just poppping up. They are also still coming up along the woods path. EP

July 30 The rest of my surprise lilies aka naked ladies, resurrection lillies have popped up. My more shaded grouping popped up a couple weeks ago. These that just popped up are in FULL SUN all day. Hmmm .... they sure are pretty!

Oh hey Posy Pet .... I smelled mine and I cannot detect any fragrance. My allergies might have something to do with that tho, and they have been so much worsse on me this year!
