I've had good luck with coleus and hosta in low-light places, and they both make nice border-type plantings that would look good against the house.

Ferns like the shade and look so pretty in masses. There are lots of wonderful varieties. I wonder if there is enough sun for astilbe.

I have had alot of luck with similar conditions with northeast exposure with bleeding heart, ferns, hostas, columbine, ligularia, wild ginger, lily of the valley, impatients (annuals), and a couple of others I can't recall. The one is frilly with little yellow flowers that blooms most of the growing season and a succulent ground cover that has really taken over.

I want to redo the bed and plant shrubs, in particular hydrangeas but can't bring myself to digging everything else up.

I have also slowly been raising the bed by adding an inch of compost to the top (as mulch) each year for added drainage, so far so good.

You can always buy a couple of different plants and have a trial garden, that's mostly how I've always determined what does well where. If it seems to be stressing I move it after a year.
