I have the goldplate-it likes to be by itself.My David phlox ran over some and killed it.I dug out the common wild white one-it spread way too fast in the rich soil in my garden.I also have some deep pink that is in rather poor soil-my neighbor has it in rich light soil and it is taking over the bed.Also just bought a paler pink plant that is half planted in a pot that blooms and seems happy if I water it every few days-it is in the pot ghetto on the back porch!The goldplate is probably my favorite.It stands up with a little support.All the others seem to want to sprawl unless in full sun and poor soil.I haven't noticed butterflies coming to any of it.They may tho.Posy Pet

I have Gold Plate and you can't kill it! I have tried. So now, I just live with it and try to remember to cut it back so it doesn't flop. I also raised from seed the Summer Pastel series and what stayed from that planting is a creamy white, and a soft lav/pink one. I also have paprika. So far, they have only self-seeded and not badly. I am not too crazy about the Paprika. It is just red for a few minutes....then changes to an unattractive shade (I think). Don't ever dig up the common one from the wild....I made that mistake and am still seeing it here and there. I don't see them as butterfly magnets either. What everything seems to love is my salvia sclarea var. turkestanica(Clary Sage).

I have Goldplate, Moonshine and The Pearl. I added The Pearl this year even though I have read that it reseeds everywhere. I want some reseeding and will pull out the rest if it reseeds in my bed. Moonshine isn't as tall as Goldplate , doesn't flop as much and is basically the same color flower. I had a seedling or two this year that I let grow that I think is from Goldplate as it is pretty tall. I like the cheery, yellow color.

Goldplate and Moonshine are in a oblong shaped bed with a Pink Delight butterfly bush in the middle, miscanthus 'Morning Light on each end with spirea 'Anthony Waterer' and barberry. Daylilies, salvia 'May Night' and 'Blue Queen', veronica 'Rosenrot', variegated iris, 'Elijah Blue' fescue grass, shasta daisy 'Marconi',lythrum, euphorbia Cyparissias and melampodiums that reseed back each year complete the bed. This bed gets no supplemental watering and does very well each year. This year the daylily foliage is brown streaked and doesn't look very good. This is my Stout Medal Bed I started for daylilies that have won that award--the highest that AHS awards.
