I would have done the same thing. Pygmy dates are fine palms and I have something of a Date Palm obsession as partially reflected in my username (nj oasis).

You may be interested to know, that each one is either male or female, so if they flower for you, chances are you will have cross pollination. (My largest one is definitely a boy.)

A few years ago, I picked up enormous clumps of Yucca recurvifolia that were left curbside--now I have them all planted in the hottest/driest areas where nothing else succeeds.

A couple of these did flower in the spring/summer (didn't actually see it) because they still had their flower pods hanging off of the plant.

When I spoke to the guy pulling them out, he said if I found him a day earlier on another site, they were throwing away a 4 or 5 footer.

I'm curious if there is a use or a need or a plausibility in contacting these companies and going around and rescuing all the palms they plant. Everywhere you go in the City, they have them planted.

I'm in the Landscaping business as well but work in suburbia not the city.

Thats a nice save! They can also get pretty pricey too.

I'm thinking tree's that size up here would go for probably $150.00 each retail.

Definitely very nice palms. It takes a while for them to get to that size, and can be hard to find them that size in northern states.

...and I'm in Canada to boot lol. I'm not sure who retails them up here but I'm sure they bring them up each spring strictly as an annual.

Thats crazy you got them like that b/c I got one at Lowes today on clearance..I paid 10 bucks for mine and its not half that size so you really scored.

I'm lucky that they are at that size they no longer look like House Plants but rather Palms you would see outside.
