Banana question

Since the banana forum isn't active this time of year, I posted my question here.

I have a Siam Ruby banana that I tried to overwinter indoors both under grow lights in my heated basement, and then also in a bedroom kept in the 50s with the blinds drawn. It is rotting in both locations. I plan to move it to my insulated garage, where this time of year the temp hangs right around 38 degrees F. The stems are rotting, but I want it to still at least come back from the roots. I haven't watered it since it's been in the cold bedroom. It is potted.

Should I remove the soil from the rootball or leave it potted to insulate the roots? I don't want the roots rotting too.
