I'm probably not the one to answer this, being in zone 7, I grow both in containers but have never heard of either becoming invasive inground. Both produce tasty fruit and, alata IMO, has one of the prettiest blooms. They do get quite big and need room to climb. My alata's stems are thicker then many of my others so it needs a good support. Even in a container they get really big so I'd imagine they'd get huge in a frost free climate. Caerulea can pollinate alata. Don't know about edulis. Some edulis are self fertile but even self fertile varieties produce better with cross pollination. You should check out the passiflora Facebook group (Myles Irvine). Lots of people, lots of info and there's definitely CA folks that grow both varieties you are asking about.

Could you give me a link to that group? "Passiflora" gets a lot of hits on FB! The one I found that *might* be the one you mean seems to be a closed group.
