Neat and pretty. I wonder if caladiums could make it. Most of the ones I overwintered in my basement rotted. It would be nice if they could stay outside.

William, I leave mine in the ground every year. always have. I just put a heavy layer a mulch over them after the first freeze. so they won't come up when it thaws. Most of the time I use leaves or straw and them put my regular bark mulch back on top. I hove only lost one or two that way all the years I have done this.
Just be sure to pull all of it back in the spring when it starts to rain and the freeze is past. Or they will rot. I don't put any mulch back around them until the rains let up so to prevent rot.
they really don't have that much growth before it gets too hot to need the mulch.

I have never tried caladiums or EE because I knew I wouldn't dig them up in the fall..........

I have left dahlias and glads in the ground for three years now. I mulch them heavily in the winter too. The glads just get mulch, but the dahlia gets a huge clay pot turned upside down over it too.

William is that another of your raised beds? It sure is pretty.

Gldno1, I have tried leaving caladium's. My one time failed. lost them all. so never replanted because I didn't want to dig up.
Maybe if I tried putting a pot over them like your dahlia that might work.
but I think mostly it was because I didn't get the mulch pulled pack in time in the spring and they had too much spring rain and rotted.

yup, triangular raised beds. we have 2 of them. we had redskin dahlias that overwintered too. started them 2 yrs ago from seed.

enjoy all the comments. I live in NW OK. and I have had
dahlias for several years, I have been leaving them in the ground last 3 years. No mulch. I think after this year I will need to dig and divide, too many came up in the same place. Here is one that bloomed for me this year.

Were your dallias up close tothe foundation? Or out in the open? I always thought they would die left unmulched.

Bonnie, My dahlias are at the East side of my house. That may help them to make it over winter. I have had lots of
them over the last 3 years. Thanks for the welcome. I always learn when reading all the posts.

I stopped growing dahlias because striped worms would bore holes in the stems. Then they would break in the wind. I would love to have a red cactus flowered dahlia again. What do you do about those worms or do they not bother yours?

Helen, I guess I am lucky in the fact that nothing
has ever bothered my dahlias, or other bulbs and flowers.
I had lots of black spot on my roses and got tired of taking care of them, dug them all up and replaced them
with Knock outs, been having good luck with them.
