Do you mulch around that planter in the winter? I would like to know because I have butterfly bush in a big pot. Your wire circles of mulch look neat. I see you have vines covering stuff in the background. Is that your kudsu?

Very pretty. I always wonder the same thing about plants in pots over the winter. Do they survive outside!

I was wondering the same thing. Did you leave them in the container last winter or are they new? Is your container bottomless?

I have four in one pot that I rooted over summer and have been trying to decide whether to put them in the ground or leave them in the pot over winter. I WAS thinking that I could plant them in my backyard so I would have butterflies closer to the house, but now we have a puppy in the backyard and I think a small shrub wouldn't stand a chance.

Love the color or yours. The flowers on mine are not as showy.

I have heard if you move you pots into the garage etc, or move them up close to your house away from the wind and mulch they will be all right.
I bring mine into the garage.
My neighbor mulches his and puts them under his deck.
Sure is pretty.

i made 5 planter boxes for the butterfly bushes. they are 18 inches square by a foot deep. they all have weed barrier screwed to the bottom by slats. i have not mulched them for 2 yrs. i think they are very hardy. i prune them back late jan early feb. they are not mobile. i think the boxes are a little small for these prolific plants.

I love butterfly bushes! I had some up north (zone 4)by the east side of greenhouse and they came back every year. The ones I had out in the open could'nt make it through the winter, one exception was black knight and it was in a protected location. the first couple yrs I mulched it heavily. Down here (zone 6) last year I had pink delight(planted in the ground in spring) that made it thru without mulch. I had 3 that froze out, I think I planted them to late in the fall and they did not get established well before cold weather set in. I have planted 2 yellow and 2 purple last spring (in the ground) and hope they will make it, time will tell. ozarkjean
