It is a bird pollinated plant thought to have evolved from a bee pollinated foetida ancestor.

Thanks. Can I collect the pollen and store it in the freezer? A few buds on my vitifolia should open in a couple days and I was wondering if I could use the palmeri var sublancelata pollen on them?

That is a beauty! Did you grow it from seed? How long did you have to wait for the first flower?

Rich I bought it as a small plant. I think it was from someone on Ebay but I can't remember who. It was about a foot long when I got it early last summer. It did have a couple buds when it arrived but they dropped from shock and this is the first time it's bloomed for me.

Very cool! I doubt it will cross with your vitifolia, but foetidas are a strong possibility. Foetidas have a different number of chromosomes than most other passis, which is why they're seldom hybridized outside their species. But this one is more closely related, so you might have a shot.

Despite foetida's reputation as smelly plants, I've yet to detect any scent from the leaves of my gossypiifolia. The flower has a sweet fragrance, though. And excellent fruit.
