Peg, can you use whole grain recipes for bread...you know, complex carbs? Have you checked out the Glycemic Index? Just checked my book and it says that 100% whole grain bread rates a 51 on the Glycemic Index as opposed to grocery store "whole wheat bread", which rates a 77 for the same 1 oz. serving. As I understand it, the whole grain takes longer to digest, so you don't get the sudden sharp increase in blood sugar. Also, keeps you feeling full longer. Is there a Mennonite community near you? They have their own bakeries in this area and stock the whole grains as well as bakery items. I have been buying whole grain "white" wheat from them for several years and baking our bread. Whole white wheat has a milder taste, but all the usual good food values.

I am withdrawing from the chit chat as we are hoping to be doing some traveling unless it has to be postponed. We've put it off twice, already. Good luck with the diabetes issue too. forecaster say we can possibly have up to 45 miles an hour winds after Rita hit landfall. I'm stocking up at the grocery store,getting out watercans and ice chest. Hub's job said there'll be no gas come Monday(due to offshore oilwells shutting down getting ready for Rita)so I have to get some cans of gas for generator and carosine(sp?) for lamps.Check on supply of those little cansiters of propane for our little camp stove. We may get nothing more than some bad storms but I don't want to get caught out like the ice storm of 2000. We managed but that was a little too much "roughing" it.

Wind gets to bad I may have to move all my renters in with us until it passes. They're in trailers and I wouldn't trust them in winds that high to stay on their foundations. It'll be a little crowded with six extra people but you do what you have to do.

Is this gas shortage to be nationwide or mostly for the states close to the gulf? We live on a farm and have to have fuel for the tractors and trucks. I'm very tired of the hot sticky days also, seems to be no end to them.

I gave up on the gardens about a month ago, a few tomatoes are limping along and a little swiss chard. Haven't even sown any radishes or lettuce seed.

If anyone has a recipe for low carb bread, I sure would be interested in it, especially those without wheat which I'm allergic to and can't eat it.

For Bigred, this is a helpful hint: at the top of the screen is spell check, on this computer it's ABC Check and it will help with any misspelled words. Right click on a word that comes up red or underlined and you will have several choices as to which spelling you want to use. I use it all of the time! M

Whew! We dodged any serious weather spawned by Rita. Rain yesterday but no where near what they were frocasting. No heavy winds no flash flooding.

predictions for gas prices if Rita damaged refineries or offshore drilling platforms along the coast but they too seem to have had little damage by the storm from what I've seen on the news.

Glad to hear that everyone is safe and relatively dry. Had visions of you paddling around the farm in a canoe, trying to find your prize plants. Just received a call from a family member visiting over in Memphis and they are under severe weather warnings and a tornado watch this AM. Appears that all of NE Ark is affected.
I can tell that you are a relatively young person. In my younger days(before REA in Stone Co.), kerosene was known as coal oil and was the fuel of choice(necessity?) for lighting and cooking. It was my chore to refuel the lamps, trim the wicks and clean the globes. In the living room we had Alladin lamps that emitted white light, better for reading and doing homework. Do I miss the good old days? Of course..NOT!

When using the internet on this computer abc check is included on the task bar. You should try clicking on tools or edit and look for spelling.

One thing I have found: if you know a person 20 or under--most of them are very computer literate- can show you how to find just about anything you need, if they will stop long enough. May need to give them a cookie, a kiss, something of value but it's worth it. Marilyn
