Since no one has answered your thread I'll give you some hints:

On the seed package how many days to maturity (bloom)? If the number of days is before your first frost...go for it.

Do you have extra seeds you don't care if they bloom in time or not...go for it.

I try every year to grow sunflowers but the deer eat them so now I just plant them for the deer.

I saw this message, and it inspired me to try one last time to get some sunflowers going this season. I planted some seeds tonight. (The squirrels have kept eating them every time I've planted this summer. I'm going to try to keep spraying Deer Off on thearea until the seed caps pop off this time. We'll see if that works. I had some absolutely gorgeous sunflowers a couple of summers ago. I want them back!

I learned from my experience from animals that eat the cotyledons off the sun flowers, its best to sprout them inside, and keep then until they have their first leaf or so, before moving them outside, then putting a protective cover until they get more rigorous. If you start them inside they sprout and will grow a little faster.

And I have lots of old milk crates in my yard so I use those to cover my seedlings until they get too tall for the box then remove them.
