How do you water?

When I use an overhead sprinkler to water my extensive beds, the flowers on my daylilies and phlox become mush, I get black spot on my roses, and mildew becomes a problem everywhere. This year I put one 50Â soaker hose each in a curving pattern in 3 different beds and ran water all night. After 8 hours or so, 12" of soil on each side of the hose is pretty wet but the rest of the bed is still dry. I donÂt think another 50Â would cover since my beds are typically 4Â to 6Â deep and heavily planted. So IÂm back to running the overhead sprinkler today. Is there a formula for coverage with soaker hoses? Other ideas?
