Checkin' the bloomers

Did a little stroll down the road today,admiring the fall bloomers.Was hoping to find the stand of lady tresses orchids blooming but I guess county mowers got them again. I need to get premisson to mark the ditch their in to protect them from mowers and move some to safe location...like my yard...LOL.

Pretty pink gerardias are blooming and I keep meaning to gather seeds to sew in my south forty(back corner of the yard).

Found what web search tells me, is climbing/vining milkweed)sarcostemma cyanchoides)greenish white flowers. Some websites call it invasive.

Just about time to go see if pig peanuts(had botanical name written down but can't find it now...starts with an"A" if anybody can help me out with botanical name. May also be refered to as ground nut) and buttonbush seeds are ready to pick. Earmarked a shrub that was blooming earlier this year,I'm pretty sure is a possum-haw viburnum.

    Peggy it is alway interesting to read about your observations of plants.The only one of those mentioned that I know of that grows here is the milkweed vine. We have one that comes back on our fence year after year. It forms some interesting pods that are filled with seed with fluffy white stuff attached to them, similar to the wild trumpet vine pods. It has't been any more invasive than any of the other vines which include sweet autumn clematis, silver lace, bittersweet, akebia, and honeysuckle. We have to cut all of them back periodically.
    We have black haw viburnum in the woods and rough leaf dogwood that has been full of clusters of white berries. The flowers are primarily the wild purple and white eupatorium commonly known as 'mist flower' and there's another I don't know the identity of. Also lots of goldenrod and wild asters. The rudbeckia lancinata blooms along the stream with the jewel weed. It's admirable that you can identify the wild flowers and try to protect them. EP

    Peggy - I was curious and tried to google "pig peanut" but that must be an unusual name for it because nothing came up that looked like a plant. Is it a vine? I did find this under "ground nut". Maybe it's the same thing. ???

    There's nothing I love better than to roam the roadsides hunting wildflowers. Would love to find a book to carry with me for on-sight i.d. I've bought numerous books but none have been specifically for my area so i.d.'s are sometimes iffy.

    Trying to find a suitable wildflower trail close for a garden club field trip. Three of the ladies have health issues that won't let them walk far. We did get to go to Hot Springs,Ark this passed spring to Garvan Woodland Gardens that was wheelchair accessable and had a wonderful time but still not what I'd call a real wildflower garden.Lots of japanese maples. Gorgeous variegated one named "Butterfly",yellow peony,lots of viburnums,azaleas and hydrangeas.Koi ponds,waterfalls,streams ,moon bridge and lots of trails to explore.I did see up close and personal the parsley-leafed hawthorn I want so bad. None of the ladies would create a diversion(sp) so I could break out the shovel and smuggle one out....LOL.

    Lycoris radiata (red spider lily) is popping up all over the yard. Have never seen a parsley leaf hawthorne. It is said to be a rare plant. Thanks for sharing your experiences. EP

    EP,
    Suppose to have a thick edging on three sides of my gazbo of red spider lily but they haven't broke ground yet. I have several smaller patches in different places of the yard that have already bloomed.

    There was lots of parsley leafed hawthorns at Garvan's,some even small enough to tuck inside a coat but as I said,my garden club sisters just would not co-operate in a commision of a crime and be my look-out....LOL
