Well i'm not in s. ca but heat pocket downtown dallas and grew one in a big urn last year -- magnificent plant, covered a 8X12 overhead trelis and started up the two story house. Just loved it, was fragrant too. I am going to plant it in ground this year and try to push the zone. It fruited first year from seed and grew in hot texas afternoon sun. Hope this helps. Sandy

I am growing Frederick againt the western wall of my house in San Jose. We get some pretty intense sun and heat, and while this is my first years growing them and I'm a bit leery, I think they'll do fine. I made sure to plant them on an overcast day so they could ease into their new spots and in the few days where we've had intense sun and warm temps they've done great.
