Does anyone know where in the oklahoma city area I can find seed potatoes for my fall garden? I don't see them in the stores now and I was wanting to throw some in the ground this fall.....

Thanks!

I've never seen them available for fall. Those times when we've wanted to raise fall potatoes we've just thrown some small potatoes back into the hole when we've dug the spring ones in July.

RATZ!! I didn't plan any in the spring because at the time I planned my spring garden I did think I would like gardening this much...so I didn't plan much.

    Ezzirah,

You can buy organic potatoes from a grocery store now, store them in a pantry or dark closet and keep an eye on them. Toss any that start to rot, but most will begin sprouting after a month or two and, if purchased now, should be ready to plant in late summer for a fall crop.

It is important that the potatoes you buy be organic because organic potatoes are not sprayed with chemicals designed to keep them from sprouting as conventionally-grown potatoes usually are.

However, because they are potatoes intended for eating and are not certified disease-free seed potatoes, there is always a risk they may develop diseases after they start growing. (On the other hand, just because a seed potato is certified to be disease-free, that doesn't mean it won't become diseased while growing, just that it was treated to prevent disease before it was sold, generally while growing in the field.)

My Wal Mart still has seed potatoes back in a corner, and I thought I saw some at TLC in Edmond

PS - all WM's dahlias and peonys & other bulbs are $2.50 a bag right now

I was in 2 nurseries here this week and both had real good seed potatoes with very short or no sprouts yet. I was surprised. They looked very good. Actually bigger than the ones I got from Ronniger's. I will say I've never had any start as good as those this year have. Not sure why. They were slow but the last week they are jumping a few inches every day. Constantly adding more mulch hilling them. Jay

First of all, I can't believe any of y'all still have seed potatoes in stores! The ones in our stores had sprouts 4 to 5" tall in late March! Imagine what they'd look like now.

Ezzirah, You're welcome. I raise them that way all the time, although this year I ordered some from Ronniger's too.

Jay, My seed potatoes from Ronniger's were slow to wake up--it sort of surprised me. But once they started to grow, they just went nuts and have grown really well since then.

Some of my potatoes have been blooming for a week or so, others just started, and some haven't started yet. They're all really healthy though.

    Dawn,
I was real surprised to see such nice seed potatoes this late. Both had them in little dark offices that I don't think are heated. So although I'm sure they never got cold enough to freeze they have been cool at night. Also not sure how long they have had them. They really looked good and I had to fight the urge to buy "just a couple". Ha.

Dawn I kept mine inside to get the sprouts started. Like I said they seemed slow. And although most came through the ground fairly soon they just seemed to set there. Then in the last 10-14 days have jumped. None blooming yet. But at the rate they are growing expect it soon. Jay

OK Dawn, Time for a sweet potato lesson. Are you growing in the ground or in raised bed? I will likely only plant a dozen plants, but don't know how far apart to plant them. I think I have 8 rooting in small pots and a few more ready to break off the potato, so I will be putting them in soon. My ground is still terrible wet.
