Be afraid, be very afraid of planting bamboo! It is very invasive and almost impossible to get rid of once established.

I agree with blueheron; bamboo is terrible stuff although that knotweed sounds even more atrocious. There are tons of other things to plant rather than this bamboo. Why not plant Green Giant Arbs? Or perhaps Norway Spruce?

Bamboo does not have to be invasive. There are both running and clumping forms of bamboo. The runners......well, they run! But they can easily be contained. And the clumpers grow just like a large ornamental grass. And clumping bamboos tend to be some of the most cold hardy types - they make an excellent privacy screen.

Don't be dscouraged from your intentions by just a lack of good, accurate information on these plants.They are no worse than many other common garden plants and offer a number of benefits if well chosen and placed.

Thank you for your replies. Blueheron we have already gotten rid of the Japanese knotweed that was on the property so I know all about that. I was thinking of the clumping varieties of bamboo. But when i said large property perhaps it was not understood, our drive is 500 ft long. Arborvitae have the disadvantage of growing very slowly so I had eliminated that option. Also many plants that might normally work like Rhodies are out because we have an over abundance of black Walnut trees. Also where I want to put the plants is in the State easement so wasting money on shrubs or trees there seems foolish. So thank all of you and if any of you have the clumping bamboo and not Japanese knotweed I am still interested.
