Looks like it should work! I used to have a crape myrtle shade my AC when I lived in Ponca City... and just planted one here, to do the same.

I also planted grape vines, that should shade the whole patio in a year or two, which in turn, will help shade the AC too.

I usually shade mine with pole beans, but there is a sidewalk between the trellis and the unit, so it gets plenty of air flow. I think it really helps to have the unit in the shade.

Update: finally getting some production out of it, and hope to get even more in the next month or two.

I used something similar, only with morning glories and moonflower vines, to shade the west side of our house the first few years after we moved here until the trees we planted got tall enough to shade the west side of the house.
