Oh my, that red oak is gorgeous! Ours are all native, and the woods are full of them. They vary in fall color. Here is a pic of the one in front of DH's shop ...:-)

I like the shape of Pin Oaks, but never planted one because they are so slow growing. I'd love to have a Willow Oak, but age ( ours) is a factor here too. :-(

I think about our ages when I plant, but our sweet neighbor that we bought the farm from was around mid-70's when she moved just down the road and built a new house. She immediately planted trees and bushes like she was going to live forever. The result is she is still here and enjoying them! Of course, she waters and fertilizes everything almost daily so she really has had some good growth with them.

It's a dogwood.So is the one to the right. Our woods are full of them, and any that come up are welcome as long as they are not in the lawn. :-)
I am mid-70s ( 74 in 21 days). DH is 80. But it isn't the age that hinders me, is the the chronic illness, arthritis and Fibromyalgia Syndrome.The latter is much worse than the arthritis.

Oooh so jealous of your October Glory. When we built our house 18 years ago, I wanted those for our front yard but the ones we found around here were around $300 for just a small tree. I think it would've been money well spent though. Now there are mature ones around town and they're BEAUTIFUL!

Marian - Hope they find a better way to manage Fibromyalgia soon. It seems there are many people suffering with it. Hang in there.
When we drove to Bentonville this spring, I noticed more and more dogwoods as we got into Arkansas growing along the roadsides. We have some in our area too but not as many as down there I think. It was a very pretty drive. I'm sure it's pretty in the fall too.

You all need to come down here in the spring for the Dogwood Tour. It starts at the Jasper courthouse, in Newton county ( the county we live in). If I am still posting here at that time, I will let you know the date.
It is hosted by the Forest Service. They had the yearly "Flaming Fall Revue" the 20th of October.
