2010 Pepper Varieties

I'm sure there was a previous thread about what peppers everyone planted but didn't find it. I'm done except for one plant. I have 39 and want to make it an even number. Will do some looking to see what the local nurseries might still have. I have several plants left but nothing I just really want another one of.

I was out of some seeds and low on others I thought I had. So my list is a little different than I had planned. Already have seeds from NMSU for next year. Not going to let that happen 2 years in a row. Also not near the numbers that many on this forum are growing. I will have ten more than I planned when I add the other one. Have some peppers on the earlier plants. So hoping for a good year. Jay

    Nice list!

I'm not even sure what I have out there now, what with the munching and replanting. I have plenty now but couldn't tell you how many or what or even the ratio of sweet to hot. LOL I do know the hots are heavy on the jalapenos as that's what the stores had at the last replanting -- and it's our favorite to can anyway.

I'll be interested to hear how the sweets taste. I'm looking to hone my sweet pepper list for next year. I'm pretty new to liking sweet peppers, although I've grown them most every year, so it's a whole new world to my taste buds.

    Jay,

You have a lot of varieties of peppers this year. I don't think I have that many different varieties this year. Maybe a dozen or so? I'll have to go out and look at them later and make a list. It's too hot to do it now. I tried to simplify by only planting 5 or 6 kinds of sweets and 5 or 6 kinds of hots. I did plant several of each variety, and then I also planted ornamental ones too. I'm hoping to avoid the oversupply of peppers that plagued me last year.

Diane, Almost all my hots are jalapenos too because that's what we use most. I did plant several kinds, and so far Mammoth Jalapeno is living up to its name. My poor pepper plants are so heavily loaded that they're falling over from the weight of the peppers. I guess I need to find time to go outside and stake them.

We're harvsted some red bells and some lilac bells, but I think that's all we've harvested so far. I like to let them turn to their mature color instead of harvesting them green, but that means waiting for 2 or 3 more weeeks.

I picked up one Serrano today while in Liberal. It is small so will be later but the only thing I saw that was decent and something I didn't have. Got enough flowers to finish planting between the tomatoes and replace a couple I lost while I was gone. Have a few more cukes and spaghetti squash to plant, also some more pole beans then will be finished except for mulching. I really feel the soil treatments I've made since the soil test have helped. Too early to tell for sure. Everything has a great dark green color. Hoping this health helps fighting off diseases later. I even separated my sweets and hots this year. Hots on one end and sweets on another. Will make it easier when picking.

Diane I will post my impressions and maybe a few pictures after I've ate enough of a variety to give it a fair review. I'm more of a NM chile type person.

The Bulls Horn Italian and the Amish Pimento Sweet are two I'm anxious to sample. They come highly recommended from a person who I trust. The Bull Horn plants seem to be vigorous. I should have seeds of them if I like them. Jay

    Jay,
That's a LOT of peppers. I really like the Pakrika's. I need to learn how to roast and dry them. I see a lot of interest on the cooking shows lately for roasted paprika in various recipes. I also like the Red Marconi for my Mediterranean recipes. It's a gorgous pepper.

I don't see any Poblano's on your list, or maybe I don't recognize a variety name? Just wondering cause I know you like the Mexican type chilis. I love these for Chili Relleno's. Nice thick walls and a good hot flavor.

But what in the world do you do with all those peppers? Maybe to market this year? Last I heard you were thinking about selling at a local farmer's market. If so, you should do very well.

Good luck on that. I envy your outstanding gardening talents :)
