this one is approx 3 to 3 1/2 ft tall. Leaf shape similar to forsythia but lighter green.

Does this look like your plant? If so it killed Lincoln's mother, but it won't hurt you unless your milk cow eats it.

Helen identified it exactly right! It is eupatorium rugosum , white snake root. It is a pretty plant but be very wary. Try to cut the blooms off before the seed heads dry! I dug one up once and brought it into a flower bed.....I am still trying to eradicate it.
I did leave a couple of plants growing this year because they look so pretty in the fall. I have clipped the blooms now.

They will take over a flower bed very quickly.

Thanks so much helen and gldno1 too. It reminded me of boneset that I had about 15 years ago. Though definitely not the same.Great link too. I enjoyed the pictures. I think it gets a temporary reprieve but may be cleared out as much as possible next year. Especially if we ever get a cow ( or, more likely a goat). I'm glad I found this forum.
