How far south?

Was just wondering if anyone could tell me how far south

I would have to drive to find a Veitchia Merillii-Christmas

palm at a Lowes/Home Depot. I am in Missouri. Just wondering if anyone living in Arkansas, Louisiana, etc....

have found these at their local stores. Thanks in advance.

I have been reading this forum and now I think I need some

palms!!!(to keep inside in the winter and outside in the summer)

I live in Chicago and we get them at homedepot all the time. Doubles and triples.

I can tell you arkansas and parts of louisiana that i know of.. I have never seen any.

Ask your local store to order one in for you. More than likely the garden center manager can get you one. I have a big pygmy date coming this spring thanks to my local Lowes....:-)

Lucky you in Chicago!! So Arkansas and Louisiana aren't any better for palms than Missouri....I tried Lowes near K.C. to order one and they called me back today and said that they couldn't get me one.

I have tried every home depot from here and all my surrounding area and they will not order palms. That kind of ticks me off because they do sell palms i mean most lowes carries cocos and we all know they have no chance of survival, . Sometimes you can get lucky and find something nice but for the most part down here you can buy pindo's , trachys, areca, robustas and
cocos only at a certain time of the year though. If they will bring in cocos how come they wont ship christmas palms or triangle palms or flamethrowers maybe some bottles ?

Here is a pic of a double that I had seperated from 5 growing in one pot from home depot.

Yep they told me the same too, that the plants they get are already ordered for them from the home office, that they have no say in what they get.
They didn't even carry shade cloth here anymore, they have cut back on a lot of things that they use to carry.

Wow Mike, wish I had one like that!!! Topher I agree with you....and Don I blame you for my addiction with tropical plants!!! It all started after seeing your pictures not to mention the plants you sent me.

They won't ship a tree from one of their Florida stores on their truck? I have had other non-nursery items shipped that way, so I would imagine they could throw a plant on if they wanted to.

I was in Home Depot the other day and was surprised with some of the palms they had. Normally the most exotic thing you can find is a bottle palm but this time they had Areca Vestiaria, Chambeyronia macrocarpa and Archontopheonix purpurea all for $50 each in 7gal containers. They also had some really nice tropical bamboo for the same price.

I wish our home depot or lowes for that matter would
get some palms like that ! Chambeyronia macrocarpa and Archontopheonix purpurea all for $50 each in 7gal containers.

topher, you should ask the manager at your local depot to get palms like this. The Home Depot that had them is on State Road 7 in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. The nursery that they got them from was called Morning Star Nursery in Lake Worth. Maybe they can order them for you.

Try beg.. because that's what i have practically done and it yields no results .

I have called every home depot and lowes within 200 miles from my house, and nobody would order anything. Something
about the liability of shipping live plants ....

I just went by Home Depot and did some digging and came across a great find. Tucked away behind several Thrinax morrisii was a beat up Kerriodoxa elegans root-bound in a 7gal container. What a find! I grabbed it and headed straight to the register. The lady at the register not knowing what it was, told me they had better looking and cheaper fan palms in the back. I just laughed and paid my $59. This baby will be in the ground tomorrow.

I think I am going to take a trip out to another Home Depot tonight to see what I can dig up. I am shocked with the nice palms they are putting on the shelf.

I tried asking Lowes and Home Depot both to order palms for me, they wouldn't. I went down to Panama City FL, last summer, and purchased a 25 gallon Needle Palm. I asked them if they could ship it up here to Michigan for me on one of their trucks, and they wouldn't do that either. They told me the same thing, that there was a liability issue with shipping live plants. It really gets to me that they can order Majesties, Chinese fans, Parlor Palms and even exotic cacti that I've never seen before, yet they can't order us some simple more cold tolerant palms, such as sabals. Sabals have got to be one of the most common palms, if not the most common palm in the eastern half of the country.

Well, let me tell you. HD and Lowes do NOT necessary carry Sabals anywhere (north or south). A few years ago, I drove from NJ to Key West. I started hitting the HD's and Lowes at about Boca Raton. I hit nearly every one from Boca to Key West. No one was selling Sabals (they were selling the SAME palm species I could but at my local HD/Lowes (which actually offers a very nice (but standard) variety (Dypsis, Chamaedorea, Livistona, Phoenix roebelini, etc.) A nursery owner explained to me that the the Sabals and Needles are sooooo slow growing--they just don't bother. I have bought decent-sized Sabals and trachycarpus on ebay though (??) for decent prices.

Home depot and lowes here normally carry a wide array of z9 and 10 palms for a really good price. I got an eight foot foxtail for $25 and they sell one foot tall king palm trios for 3 dollars and change. I think the reason they can do that is that there are litterally HUNDREDS of palm nurseries around the area and they can afford to grow and sell them in mass quantities. This last month i bought a group of five pygmy dates in a three gallon pot for $12. I seperated them and now i have them lining the side of a patio.

njoasis, which Sabal are you looking for? As for variety, my local home depots are carry a lot more variety now and have a section dedicated to the more exotic palms. I included a link that to one of the nurseries that they are buying from.

Here is a link that might be useful: Morning Star Nursery

I noticed the same thing with sabals. I even tried Wal-mart but no one had them. They told me to try a nursery. I just assumed that they didn't carry sabals because they grow like weeds down there - literally. But the slow growth does make sense. I did, however, buy a 25 gallon needle palm from Home Depot from the same city. It was grown at Morning Star Nursery. Which does pose the question: If needles grow slower than sabals, and they do sell needles, then why no sabals? Maybe the weed palm theory? I wish they would start selling them at big box stores. My sabal minors have gone unprotected here in Michigan all winter, and are doing fine. Sabal minor could be the new Yucca Filamentosa LOL.

Josh you just answered your own question ! why carry needles and not sabals ?

island, they are very common (Sabal Palmetto and etonia) and don't get a lot of respect here becuse they are found on just about every unlcearled lot. People do buy them but they are usually full grown and are harvested from land clearings. Usually if you see them in our yards, they were there when the lot was cleared and the builder left them there to save some landscaping funds. However, after the 2004 and 2005 hurricanes, many Floridans regained a lot more respect for them. Of all my tall palms the Sables and Dates were the only ones that came though the storm unscathed. Mine took winds upwards of 130mph. My coco's were shredded, my royals were twisted in knots, my bismarks crowns looked like they were going to fall out, but there are my sabals looking like there wasn't even a storm.

It is often the case that people fail to see the beauty in the familiar. I think Sabals are really cool. They are supposed to be among the most ancient of palms. I am no longer looking for Sabal. I have managed to acquire the following: S. texana, S. louisiana, S. palmetto, and S. mautitiiformis. The texana is my biggest. I kind of prefer it to the the palmetto (seems more robust). So far, I haven't had the sabals in the ground. I have a needle palm (Rhaphidophyllum) but so far, this species just doesn't do it for me (way too slow). This was the first year for the larger Trachycarpus palms (fortunei and wagnerianus). They look pretty good so far. PS. Very interesting about Sabals resiliance in response to hurricane force winds.
