I grew it from a purchased plant a few years ago. Since then, it comes back from dropped seeds each year.
It takes awhile to get going, but once the weather gets warm, it really takes off. The ripened purple seeds in late summer are very messy if you have it near a patio.
I haven't tried eating it yet. I grow it for its beautiful lush look.

Tried Malabar this year hoping to extend my season. Makes pretty vine that grows fast and needs 8' trellis or more. Pretty but not very good to eat. Fresh it was slick and slimmy. Gave mom some and she said the same thing. Sorry we just couldn't eat it. Didn't try to cook it though.

Tried Malabar a couple of years ago. It grew very well, but we didn't care much for taste. Was more like chard than spinach. We usually pick our spinach young, so it tastes very mild. Chard has an earthy (for lack of a better word) taste that we don't care for.

Well there seems to be more people that don't like it than those that do like it. I like spinach salad but if you buy fresh spinach it doesn't store very long so I thought it would be handy to put a vine out in the back yard. Maybe I need to think again and just find a good spot for spinach instead of Malabar. Thanks : )
