I'm not a cucumber expert. But if you liked what your dad raised I'd suggest a burpless type. Here's a link for a discussion on these.

My DH always grew Straight Eights cukes, an old time cuke. They always did well.
We grew Summer Dance,Japenese long type,that was good and did well.
We always grew ours on tomato cages made of hog panels.
We started ours in a greenhouse and put them out when it was warm. They do'nt like cold weather.

christie- i am not large on cucumbers but the best i ever had were pyralis f1. they are available from totally tomatoes and not cheap. 5 seeds for around $4.25.

was going through my seed packets this weekend trying to get my tomato seeds in some kind of order and found 5 different cuke varities:
holland hybrid
painted serpent
diva
boothby's blond
sweet success

George - Thank you for the link. I think what my dad grew was most likely an older, common variety since he bought the seeds locally so maybe it was the Straight Eights Vickie mentioned. I will watch for those.
William - If I can't find the ones my father grew, I'll let you know. I already have some Painted Serpent seeds that I got in a trade, but I didn't realize they were cucumbers. I thought it might be a type of gourd or something. I'll plant some of those next summer too. Thanks
