Not that I know of but there is a palm that looks like a coconut palm that is cold hardy to about 28-30f I think. I forgot its scientific name but if you google " frozen coconut" or "california coconut" you should find it. Good luck.

No, the only hybrids with a coconut have been Elaeis X Cocos that is in a foreign botanical garden in Singapore and a Butia X Cocos done by a man in California (the seeds are just starting to sprout). Attempts have been made with Jubaeopsis, but they failed. Crosses with queens have been attempted many times and all have failed.

I don't know of that hybrid, but something to consider is the Butia Capitata(Pindo) x Syagrus Romanzoffiana (Queen). They look more like a coconut than any other palm that I know of, and are much more hardy. Here is a link:

Here is a link that might be useful: X Butiagrus nabonnandii

Mule palms are definitely the closest you will get to that coconut palm look this far north. They will need some protection but can definitely handle some 20s and probably teens when its older.
    Good luck!

I have a butia x cocos. It has been done and will be done again this summer by Mark Lynn. He is the pollinator and owner of Mule Palm Nursery. However I doubt it will ever be for sale to the general public. It will be atleast a decade before we know how cold hardy it can be. I have had mine out doors in the pacific northwest since March and it has seen temps around 37F on a nightly basis.

As far as I know there were 7 that survived his last attempt and he distributed these to friends and family. Most of them remained in Florida.

If you would like to see a photo email me at sales@mulepalm.com

I have heard lots of claims that there are some that have been crossed with this palm or that but no real proof that I know of. I guess we have to take them at there word at the moment. I am calling no one a liar by the way I am just going to reserve judgment until I see one that you can clearly see is real.I have seen pictures of a Butia X Coconut but it didn't look like a coconut at all to me.

There is no question as to what it is. Mark Lynn sprays his Butias down. Then bags and tags and cages his Butia's so there is no cross pollination involved. He has taken all the guess work out of any of the Hybrids he does. He has been doing Hybrids for over 15 years and has a 99 percent success rate.

I believe the one you have seen photos of is Mark Heaths in Orlando. Which is definatley questionable as he did bag his tree so anything could have pollinated it and is just wishfull thinking. In my opinion he has a backcross which we have and that it resembles.

We are still in search for a good cocos pollen source. Whoever has it first gets one of these butia x coconut crosses.

I saw a recent photo of Mark Heath's alleged Cocos hybrid a couple months ago on another palm forum and to me it looks exactly like what I'd expect such a hybrid to look like. To my eyes, it showed both Butia and Cocos characteristics.

It is definately an impressive looking Palm. It will be awhile before ours catch up with it. I have saved his photos to comare later when ours get larger.

Forum members I am still in search of cocos Nucifera pollen and lots of it.

Mark Lynn would like to continue producing more of these if he can.
