Aguga was well established here when we came here and the property had not been occupied for 2 years. It is a beautiful ground cover. One thing about it is that it 'travels'. The original plant will die off after sending off runners to establish new plants. I put some around a rock foundation for a container last year, have done nothing to it except an occaisional watering and it has spread beautifully. It does well in shade but can handle some sun. I second what EP said. Mine was growing under my huge pecan tree where grass doesn't grow. The past two summers I have been digging up bits of it and planting it in other parts of my shady front yard. Every place where I transplanted it has spread beautifully, and that's with very little care - sometimes even forgetting to water the transplants. In the spring the purple flowers are beautiful, especially in combo with the violets that also grow all over my yard.

Probably you were told not to spend much money on it because it spreads so quickly and also because you might be able to find someone who would give you some starts.

Interesting stuff, ajuga.
I planted some in the shade of my carport and it did fine for a few years. But it didn't seem to like the way the fertile soil tended to stay pretty moist there and another ground cover that does like those conditions (chameleon plant) took over. I gave some to a friend who planted it in her nasty, unimproved clay subsoil (pushed into place by road builders near her house) under a self seeded elm that sucks the life out of all the soil around it, and the silly stuff has taken off like gangbusters!
So, it it likes your yard it will spread and do very well. If not, it will die.
