Let me say that foetida var. gossypiifolia fruit ripens very abruptly. One day it's green, then the next it's bright red. Surprised the heck out of me.

Anyway, I picked my lone fruit and let it set for two days to continue ripening (if it needed to). Then I cut it open. The first thing that struck me was that the fruit rind is thin and papery, not at all like that of a maypop. The fruit itself is on the smallish side, roughly the size of the tasteless orange fruit set by my caerulea. There were roughly 60 seeds inside.

Now, here's the good news--the pulp was good. Significantly more tasty than incarnata, which is quite edible in its own right. The flavor is about half way between that of a maypop and purple edulis, if that makes any sense. Now, if I could just get both my plants blooming at the same time...
