Mulch question

I'm bumping this portion of another post...:

Meanwhile, I do have a question. My daughter's newly-created plot is a very sandy loam with some added composted cotton burrs. Last night we went out and it looks like the Dust Bowl Days (can you imagine how downhearted those people had to have been???)...she obviously needs a good layer of mulch to hold her soil and moisture. What would be inexpensive and yet good for her to use? Her plot is 8 X 8, but only 10 plants - 2 watermelon, 2 tomato, 1 eggplant, and 5 peppers. My compost pile is smallish and new this year and still in process, so I don't think we'd benefit from pulling some of it out to use. I'm thinking maybe a trip back to the stables/horse fields where we got some composted manure for my use earlier in the spring?? They've got huge piles in the fields, so maybe we could get down under those for the best partially-composted sawdust and manure combo...any other thoughts?

Thanks!
