Yup, it's a climber.
You will hear "plant it in well draining soil" but to me "well draining" means if I don't pay attention to the exact moment the leaves start to droop & it needs water... It's dead.

So I plant all mine in either rite-aid's potting mix (because it's cheap) or miracle grow potting mix.. Whatever I have on hand.

Usually little guys go in a 4" pot until they get established, then into a gallon pot.
If you're growing outside I leave the pots right on the ground- then when I move I cut the roots off, cut back the plant & go.

If you don't give it something to climb on... It'll find something. Detaching it from that something can be a bit tedious so... Yes.
