You just wait patiently for them to reach the softneck stage and fall over.

I feel like I've been waiting forever for my last couple of varieties (Highlander and Red River) to finish up, and it feels like it has taken them longer than I thought I would. They are just now starting to reach the soft neck stage. One of them has about the same estimated DTM as Super Star and the other is supposed to be slightly later.

I'm not sure when you planted your onions there, but I planted in mid-February and my Super Stars were mostly finished up about two weeks ago. There's still a handful of them that haven't fallen over yet. I assume they'll eventually get around to toppling over like good onions should. I've never yet seen a bulbing onion that did not eventually hit the soft neck stage and flop over onto the ground.

Dawn, thanks. These were the last onions I planted. I don't remember the date but I am sure it was after mid Feb.. All of my Candy Apple are not done either, they were planted about the same time as these.

Robert, that sure is a large onion. I have never grown anything like that, what type is it?

It's a super star, just don't look white in the photo.

We had a lot of wind today and it helped topple a lot of the Red River and Highlander onions. About 50% were down on the ground tonight, and a few were completely up out of the ground and lying on top of it. I'll gather them up tomorrow. So, Larry, I think the answer is you need a really strong wind storm to help those Super Stars fall over and hit the ground.

I don't think I've ever had the wind break as many onions as it has this year, and the wind in general doesn't seem like it has been worse this year than in previous years. It is such a strange weather year.
